Aboricultural Clerk of Works

Arboricultural Clerk of Works (ACoW) services provide independent on-site arboricultural supervision throughout the construction and development process to help ensure compliance with planning conditions, approved arboricultural documentation, and BS5837:2012 recommendations. Where development takes place near retained trees, professional arboricultural monitoring plays an essential role in protecting tree health, maintaining structural stability, and ensuring that valuable landscape features are successfully retained alongside construction activities.

I provide Arboricultural Clerk of Works services for residential, commercial, public sector, and infrastructure projects, working closely with developers, contractors, architects, engineers, and local authorities throughout all stages of development. My role is to oversee and advise on the implementation of tree protection measures and arboricultural best practice, helping to minimise the risk of damage to retained trees and avoid unnecessary conflicts between construction requirements and tree protection constraints.

Construction activity can have significant impacts on trees if not properly managed, particularly within Root Protection Areas (RPAs). Damage caused by excavation, soil compaction, changes in ground levels, storage of materials, contamination, or unauthorised access can lead to long-term decline or instability that may not become apparent until years after development is complete. Regular arboricultural supervision helps identify and address these issues early, ensuring that protective measures remain effective throughout the project.

My Arboricultural Clerk of Works services may include:

  • Pre-commencement site meetings
  • Monitoring Installation and inspection of tree protection fencing and ground protection
  • Supervision of works within Root Protection Areas (RPAs)
  • Arboricultural toolbox talks and contractor guidance
  • Monitoring demolition, excavation, and foundation works near retained trees
  • Supervision of specialist construction techniques within sensitive areas
  • Site inspections during key stages of development
  • Ongoing liaison with contractors, project teams, and local planning authorities
  • Recording and reporting of monitoring visits for planning compliance

Detailed monitoring reports are provided following site visits, documenting compliance with approved Tree Protection Plans (TPPs), Arboricultural Method Statements (AMS), and planning conditions. These reports provide a clear audit trail demonstrating that tree protection measures have been implemented and maintained appropriately throughout the development process.

Professional arboricultural monitoring not only helps protect retained trees but can also reduce delays, prevent costly remedial works, and help avoid breaches of planning conditions that could lead to enforcement action, project delays, or financial penalties. My approach is practical, collaborative, and focused on balancing development requirements with responsible tree management and long-term landscape retention.

All Arboricultural Clerk of Works services are carried out in accordance with BS5837:2012 Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition and Construction – Recommendations, current arboricultural guidance, and local authority planning requirements.
